Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling? 6 Critical Causes & Solutions
Is your AC blowing room-temperature air? Learn the difference between dirty filters, low refrigerant gas, bad capacitors, and compressor tripping.
When you turn on your AC in peak summer and it merely blows warm or room-temperature air, it can be extremely frustrating. Having serviced thousands of air conditioners across three decades, our field engineers frequently diagnose the following primary causes:
1. Heavily Clogged Air Filters
A choked mesh filter restricts airflow across the cooling evaporator coil. Without adequate airflow, heat exchange cannot happen, causing the coil to frost over and air velocity to drop drastically.
Solution: Clean mesh filters every 15 days under running tap water.
2. Refrigerant (Gas) Leakage
Refrigerant does not 'burn out' or get consumed like vehicle fuel. If your AC is low on gas, there is an active microscopic leak in the copper tubing, condenser bends, or flare nuts. Signs include ice formation on the thin liquid line copper pipe outside.
Solution: A certified technician must run nitrogen pressure testing, braze the pinhole leak, vacuum the system to 500 microns, and refill gas by weight.
3. Faulty Compressor Run Capacitor
In split ACs, a dual-run capacitor provides the phase shift needed to spin the heavy outdoor compressor motor. Summer power fluctuations often weaken capacitors. You might hear a buzzing sound every few minutes as the compressor attempts to start and trips on thermal overload.
Solution: Capacitor replacement with original microfarad rating.
4. Dirty Outdoor Condenser Coil
If the outdoor unit is coated with dust, mud, or pigeon droppings, it cannot dissipate heat outdoors. The compressor temperature rises above safe limits, triggering the internal thermal cutoff.
Solution: Deep jet-pump washing of outdoor coil fins.
5. Inverter Sensor & PCB Faults
Modern inverter ACs utilize electronic sensors (room sensor, coil sensor, ambient sensor) and an outdoor inverter drive board. An open circuit or wrong resistance reading causes the PCB to restrict compressor RPM.
