Why Is the Refrigerator Not Cooling? Freezer Working but Fridge Warm
Understand the bimetal thermostat, defrost heater, evaporator fan motor, and door gasket issues in modern frost-free refrigerators.
In a frost-free double-door refrigerator, 90% of cooling complaints where the top freezer is icy cold but the bottom vegetable compartment is warm stem from a clogged air damper or a failed automatic defrost cycle.
How Frost-Free Cooling Operates:
The cooling coil (evaporator) is located inside the freezer compartment. A small fan blows chilled air down into the lower compartment through an insulated duct. Every 8 to 12 hours, an internal defrost heater turns on to melt away accumulated frost.
What Goes Wrong?
- Defrost Sensor or Thermostat Failure: If the sensor fails, the heater never turns on. Ice builds up until the entire duct is choked solid with frost, blocking airflow to the bottom.
- Evaporator Fan Motor Stalled: If the fan motor fails, chilled air remains trapped in the freezer and cannot circulate.
- Worn-Out Door Gasket: A warped magnetic door gasket leaks warm ambient air into the cabinet continuously, creating excessive moisture.
